Lilburn is a city near Atlanta in the western part of Gwinnett County, Georgia.

History of Lilburn

Lilburn was once the sanctuary of a particular Native American Indian tribe known as Lower Creeks. Lilburn was formerly a hunting place for the American Indians with their villages situated in its southern part of the area. During the 1818, government started ceasing Indian lands to further encouraged settlement of these areas. Lotteries were used by the government to hand out the Indian lands to its prospective new owner. It was William McDaniel who was the won the land lot which is now the present day Lilburn. Consequently, Lilburn was called McDaniel town. It was around the 1900 that this town’s name was changed again.

Lilburn was named after Lilburn Trigg Myers who was the general superintendent of the Seaboard Airline Railway, the commercial entity which purchased these lands from William McDaniel. The State of Georgia incorporated the City of Lilburn on July 27, 1910. A disastrous fire hit in Lilburn in the morning of November 15, 1920. It caused the destruction of the business section of the city. It can be said that Lilburn experienced its own set of hardships. Nevertheless, it has fully recovered and better than ever.  

Population of Lilburn

As of the 2000 census, there are about 11,307 residents in Lilburn. Out of this number, 3,943 are households and 2,835 are families. The population of people per unit area in Lilburn is 707.9 per square kilometers. The races in LilburLilburnn, Georgia include White (69.09%), African American (11.93%), Native American (0.34%), Asian (11.69%), Pacific Islander (0.03%), Hispanic (or Latino) (13.22%) and other races (4.81%). The median income for every household in Lilburn is $53,707. However, the median income for a family is $62,563. Furthermore, for every 100 females there are 97.1 males.

Economy of Lilburn

Lilburn is a very prosperous city. As of the 2000 census, its per capita income is $22,503 in comparison to the $21,587 nationally. Moreover, only 6.1% of the population and 4.7% of the families are below the poverty line. Its thriving industries include manufacturing, wholesale trade, professional services, information and finance.

Lilburn is also popular for their City Park which features 10-acres of land allocated for walking/jogging oaths, playground, and tennis courts, rental pavilion and open-field area. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Atlanta is also a sight to see if you are in Lilburn. It is the largest Hindu stone temple constructed outside India. It is also the tallest building in Lilburn, towering about 75 feet. Its total land mass (area) is 32,000 square feet. It is officially called the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir. The temple was built using 4,500 tons of Italian Carrera marble, 4,300 tons of Turkish limestone and 3,500 tons of Indian pink sandstone. What’s great is that the temple’s sanctuary is open for all, anyone can visit it.
